Valentin Michailowitsch Kornew ( Russian Валентин Михайлович Корнев ; born August 29, 1942 in Yaroslavl , Russian SFSR ; † November 18, 2016 ibid) was a Soviet sports shooter .
successes
Valentin Kornew took part in the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 and in Munich in 1972 . In the three-position fight with the free rifle, he scored a total of 1151 points in 1968, winning the silver medal behind Gary Anderson and ahead of Kurt Müller . In the prone position with the small bore rifle, he took 16th place. Four years later he remained six points behind the medal positions in the three-position battle with the free rifle and finished the competition with 1143 points in eighth place. In the prone attack, he did not get past 34th place with the small bore rifle.
In 1966 in Wiesbaden and 1974 in Thun , Kornew was eight times vice world champion with the team : In 1966 he took second place with her with the small-bore rifle in three-position combat, in standing and kneeling positions, in 1974 he succeeded in doing this with the free rifle in lying and standing position , as well as in the three-position competition with the free rifle, the standard rifle and the army rifle. In between he won the title in Phoenix in 1970 in the individual three-position fight with the free rifle as well as in the team competitions with the free rifle in the kneeling position and in the three-position competition with the standard and army rifle. He also secured another three silver and two bronze medals at the world championships. In addition, he became European champion in 1969 in Pilsen in the individual kneeling attack with the free rifle. Kornew, who belonged to the Soviet national team from 1964 to 1976, won a total of 16 individual championships at the national level between 1966 and 1976.
Valentin Kornew was a major in the Soviet Army . After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he taught at a military school in his native and hometown of Yaroslavl. Kornew was also active as a shooting sports coach: among other things, he looked after the Soviet women's national team in the rifle disciplines for almost ten years.
