Walentyna Karachentseva

Walentyna Juchymiwna Karatschenzewa ( Ukrainian Валентина Юхимівна Караченцева , Russian Валентина Ефимовна Караченцева * 14. July 1940 in Chernihiv ) is a Soviet - Ukrainian astronomer .

Life

Karachenzewa, married to the astronomer Igor Dmytrovich Karachenzew (* 1940 in Kiev ), graduated from the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev in 1962. She then worked there with interruptions until 2002.

From 1964 to 1967 Karachentseva worked in the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic in Yerevan .

From 1971 to 1988 Karachentseva worked in the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR near Zelenchukskaya , Karachay-Cherkessia . In 1975 she successfully defended her dissertation on the search and investigation of dwarf galaxies of the Sculptor type for her doctorate as a candidate in the physical and mathematical sciences.

Karachenzewa and her husband discovered around 600 faint and extremely faint dwarf galaxies and determined their spatial distribution in order to create catalogs. As a member of an international team, she received distance values ​​for up to 150 dwarf galaxies from the Hubble Space Telescope , so that she could create a three-dimensional map of the nearby universe . In 1996, after defending her doctoral thesis with the new galaxy catalogs , she received her doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences.

Since 2009 Karachentseva has been a Senior Research Associate at the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev.
