Walk Through Fire is a post-metal band founded in Gothenburg in 2008 .

history

The band was formed in 2008 as a side project of the bands Relevant Few and Abandon . Relevant Few and Abandon members Ufuk Demir and Johan Carlzon brought in David Flood from Monachus and together they founded the Walk Through Fire project. Demir took over the guitar and bass playing, Flood the drums and Carlzon the vocals. Carlzon left the band in 2008, shortly before he died of an overdose and before the group began their first studio recordings. The group's self-titled demo recording was recorded as a duo without singing. The demo was well received in the Swedish music media and marketed through Wolves & Vibrancy Records and later through Aesthetic Death Records . After Walk Through Fire had achieved national underground fame, Oscar from the punk band Hemskt Näringsliv joined the guitarist and bassist Andreas Olsson on their first tour of Sweden. In 2010 the line-up changed again. Oscar and David Flood left the group, which then gradually reoriented itself musically. In addition to the new musicians, Fredrik Flegar as guitarist and Jonny Vigart as drummer, some new pieces have since been recorded with vocals. Members Olsson and Demir contributed to this as singers. With this line-up, the official debut album Furthest from Heaven was recorded for the British Extreme Doom label Aesthetic Death Records. The album was mastered by the singer of the British funeral doom band Esoteric , Greg Chandler . The album was released in 2011 and received mostly positive, but not outstanding, reviews. Following the release, Vigart left the band again and was replaced by Juliusz Chmielewski from Misteltein and Fall of Seraphim . By 2013 the band played another national tour and meanwhile canceled three more planned tours. In the winter of the year the group began recording their third studio album Hope Is Misery , which was also released in March 2014 via Aesthetic Death Records. Like its predecessor, the album was largely positively discussed.

style

Based on the term Hisingen Blues , which the group Graveyard claims, Walk Through Fire uses the expression Hisingen Sludge as a self-designation. The music played by Walk Through Fire is commonly attributed to post-metal. The group is compared to popular representatives of the genre such as Neurosis , Isis and Dirge . While the group for the album Furthest from Heaven was still referred to as a copy of Neurosis, the following album is certified to be more independent. The music is classified as particularly “nihilistic and negative” as well as “speed-free” with “hypnotic monotony”. A “creeping monotony” was already attested to the debut album, but this album was said to have a distinct structure reminiscent of neurosis. Like the "Original [Neurosis], the majority of the pieces are based on dynamic loud-quiet guitar playing that is suddenly ironed out with mega-ton thunder riffs, polyphonic roaring and very organically produced tribal drumming."

The group's guitar playing is described as noisy and booming , the struck riffs lingering for a long time. The music is described as "minimally percussive, almost purely riff-oriented [and] largely instrumental". The singing is remarkable, but it is not the focus of the music. The minimalist and persistently guttural vocals are described as "angry" and "brutal" with an attitude borrowed from Black Metal .
