Relevant Few was a Swedish death metal and grindcore band from Gothenburg , which was founded in 2000 under the name Mindsnare and disbanded around 2009.

history

The band was founded in October 2000 under the name Mindsnare and consisted of bassist and singer Robert Hakemo, guitarist Kristian Lampila, drummer Daniel "Mojjo" Moilanen, guitarist Johan Nilsson and singer Johan "JC" Carlzon. Hakemo and Lampila already knew each other from their work together with the band Gooseflesh. After they both had decided to form a band together, they met Moilanen in a club, who had played in a Slipknot tribute band. Lampila had also worked in a club where he had seen Carlzon play in his band Abandon . After the first five rehearsals, the group had developed ten songs before appearances followed. The first of these took place on December 15, 2000 in Gothenburg together with Nasum . In addition, the band recorded their first demo live in February 2001 , which did not require computer processing. The band then reached a record deal with No Tolerance Records in April 2001 . This was done with the help of Tomas Lindberg , who heard the demo and recommended the band to the label. Since there was already an Italian and an Australian band with this name, the group was renamed Relevant Few.

The debut album Who Are Those of Leadership? Was released via No Tolerance Records in 2002 . . The album was also recorded live with Riszas Mobile Recordings in their rehearsal room. In the autumn of the same year a tour with Napalm Death was planned, but it had to be canceled because Johan Carlzon had left the cast in January 2002 for personal reasons. After a few months, the singer Henke Svensson joined in as a replacement, before the band played on the fifth Fuck the Commerce shortly afterwards . Relevant Few had replaced the label colleagues Retaliation , who had to cancel their appearance at the festival. Then the group began with the recordings for the second album, which lasted two days and was done again live and later - as with the last album - was remixed by Riszas Mobile Recordings. In February 2003 Moilanen left the band and Johan Nilsson also turned his back on them, as he moved to Örnsköldsvik . In 2004 the album was finally released under the name The Art of Today on New Haven Records . Since Moilanen had left because he had not gotten along with Johan Nilsson and this had been clarified by Nilsson's departure, Moilanen had returned to Relevant Few in December 2003. In the same month the group recorded a cover version of the nuclear assault song Critical Mass for a sampler by Evigt Lidande Productions . In June 2002 a gig in Trollhättan was recorded, which was released as a live album under the name Live: Revolution! should appear, but this did not happen even after a long delay. In the meantime they had recorded a newer gig in Gothenburg for a live album, as the band still consisted of five members at the gig in Trollhättan and there were only four of them due to the departure of Johan Nilsson. This was followed by a tour with Vader in August 2004, followed by two more with Gadget in September and Deicide in November. Then Moilanen left the cast again and Henke Svensson left the group at the end of 2005. Johan Carlzon then returned to the band and in October 2005 Ufuk Demir joined the band as the new drummer. In this changed line-up, appearances followed along with Lazarus Blackstar, Gloomy Sunday and Atomvinter . In 2006 the band announced the release of the EP Hardening Black . Instead, the resulting material was used for a split release together with Afgrund , which was released in 2007 by Lifestage Productions . In 2008, Johan Carlzon died of a drug overdose at the age of 32. The band is no longer active.

style

According to laut.de , the band plays grindcore with “extremely political lyrics”. According to Daniel Ekeroth in his book Swedish Death Metal , the band plays grindcore and death metal in the style of napalm death. Janne Stark described in his book The Heaviest Encyclopedia of Swedish Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Ever! the music also as Grindcore and Death Metal in the style of Napalm Death and Brutal Truth with short intense songs. In his review of The Art of Today , Anzo Sadoni from Metal Hammer stated that Relevant Few is less traditional to work than other Swedish grindcore bands like Nasum and Regurgitate and incorporates influences from Death Metal. The growls would be reminiscent of George Fisher . According to Bas Smit of lordsofmetal.nl , the band has often been compared to bands like Brutal Truth and Napalm Death on the first two albums. In an interview with Smit, which came out after the release of the second album, Hakemo stated that he is currently influenced by bands like Today Is the Day , Neurosis and Isis . He first became aware of Napalm Death through Scum , earlier he got to know Harmony Corruption and later became enthusiastic about Brutal Truth. He declined a comparison with Nasum because Relevant Few concentrated more on old-school grindcore. In an interview with listen-to-it.de , Hakemo also indicated an influence of Napalm Death and Brutal Truth. Hakemo also hears bands that do not come from the metal sector, such as The Prodigy , Depeche Mode , The Chemical Brothers , Massive Attack , Muse and Placebo . He stated that the band's lyrics are politically oriented and that he draws song ideas from experiences in daily life, past relationships, newspaper reports and TV. The song Is There No Hope? was about a past relationship with Hakemo, No Savior was about increasing camera surveillance in public and Lustrous Pattern was about how the USA declared war after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 .
