Abandon ( English leaving ) was founded in 1996 Sludge- and post-metal band.

history

Abandon was founded in 1996 by guitarists Johan Nilsson and Ingvar Sandgren, singer Johan Carlzon, bassist Carl Linnaeus and drummer Magnus Häggman. Häggman left the group after recording the first demo CD Dark Days Ahead in 1998 and was replaced by Dani Cosmi. After recording the second demo CD Unfinished Blasphemy , Nilsson and Linnaeus left the group. David Fredriksson joined Abandon as the new bass player, and the band decided not to have a second guitarist. The group's demo recordings were based on groups like Pantera and Crowbar . Only with Fredriksson's entry into the band did Abandon vary their style more into the mixture of post-metal and sludge that was later popular for them.

For the release of the official debut album When It Falls Apart 2001, the band was able to sign a contract with the Swedish label Black Star Foundation . The publication, limited to 500 copies, hardly received any international attention. That was only given to the second In Reality We Suffer , published in 2004 . The album, which was also first released through the Black Star Foundation, was presented to an international audience in 2005 through editions from Earache Records and Codebreaker Records . The album In Reality We Suffer , recorded with Mehdi Vafaei, who brought his suction wind harmonium into the recordings, met with a positive response in German, British and Canadian webzines .

After the positive response, Abandon began various European tours as well as a lengthy writing and production process for the third studio album. But the recording of the album was interrupted several times. The musicians named the drug and drug addiction of two band members as the main problem. Among them was the heroin addiction of the singer Carlzon, who died of an overdose in Barcelona on December 17, 2008 during a tour of Spain. The band announced the death of the singer along with an appeal for donations to finance the transfer. Carlzon's sister Elize Ryd then joined the band Amaranthe to continue a style of music similar to that of her late brother. Meanwhile, the band finished recording The Dead End . The album was released in 2009 and is dedicated to Carlzon's legacy. His sister contributed a drawing depicting him to the design, which was otherwise based on Carlzon's painting. The album was again positively received internationally. The group played subsequent concerts with Ufuk Demir from Walk Through Fire , whose member Carlzon was also temporarily. However, there were no further publications. The future of the group is uncertain. The website of the Black Star Foundation label describes the group's career as ended; elsewhere, Ufuk Demir is listed as the band's new singer.

style

The music presented by Abandon since its debut is classified as post-metal or sludge. For a better localization, comparisons with genre representatives like Monarch! , Grief , Breach , EyeHateGod and especially keen on Khanate , Cult of Luna and Neurosis .

For the website Doom-Metal.com, the music is described as a "hellish mixture of sludge and noise core with a clear Funeral Doom influence ". The group present a genre-typical mixture of dynamics, tribal drumming, distorted bass playing and desperate-sounding vocals. Matt Mooring of Metalreviews insists that the group develop their pieces with the right amount of melody and tempo changes. The melodies and the dynamics of the pieces would give the harsh passages enough contour to unfold. A particularly striking feature of the music is the organ sound of the suction wind harmonium, which has a particularly gloomy perceived atmospheric effect. The predominantly barked and bellowed guttural vocals also had a dark, aggressive and desperate effect. The rest of the instrumentation corresponds to the dynamics between dark, atmospherically calm arrangements and harsh, raw outbursts. The guitar playing as well as the rhythm section varies between withdrawn, in part acoustic, passages described as angry, raw and powerful.
