Walter Birnbaum (physicist)
Walter Robert Oswald Birnbaum (born April 9, 1897 in Zittau , † February 1925 ) was a German physicist.
Life
After passing the high school diploma in spring 1916, he served in the army until December 1918, then studied mathematics and physics in Leipzig and later in Göttingen . With Ludwig Prandtl he received his doctorate on October 25, 1922 with the thesis The plane problem of the flapping wing to inexplicable vibrations on the wings at higher flight speeds, which had led to many accidents.
In 1923/24 he was a research assistant at the AEG laboratory. Around 1923 he developed, according to the report by Max Michael Munk , a simpler solution for the wing profile by replacing the main arch ( mean camber line ) with a vertebral arch.
On the New Year of 1925 he entered the Aerodynamic Research Institute, but passed away six weeks later.
