Walter Czeratzki

Walter Czeratzki (born December 9, 1912 in Skudayen , East Prussia , † July 17, 1978 in Braunschweig ) was a German arable and crop scientist .

Live and act

Walter Czeratzki studied agriculture from 1934 to 1937 at the Technical University of Danzig and at the University of Halle . After passing his diploma exam, he stayed in Halle and worked as a scientific assistant to Theodor Roemer at the Institute for Plant Cultivation and Plant Breeding. Here he primarily dealt with basic research in agricultural physics. In 1940 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the influence of soil swelling and colloid shrinkage on soil structure. Military service and captivity interrupted his scientific work. After 1945 he first worked in a private seed breeding company, from 1947 to 1949 at the Bundessortenamt in Rethmar . There he dealt with the history of variety tests on sugar beet .

From 1950 to 1977 Czeratzki worked as a research assistant at the Federal Research Center for Agriculture in Braunschweig , initially at the Institute for Soil Tilling, and since 1971 at the Institute for Crop Production and Seed Research . The main focus of his research here were investigations into questions of soil cultivation , soil structure , water movement in the soil and field irrigation . He masterfully understood how to present the respective state of knowledge of current research problems in well-founded overview articles and at the same time to show measures how the practice of land management can be improved.
