Walter Dick (medic, 1899)

Walter Dick (born June 1, 1899 in German Beneschau ; † September 10, 1990 in St. Kanzian am Klopeiner See ) was an Austrian-Czechoslovak-German surgeon and university professor .

Life

Walter Dick, son of a general practitioner, studied medicine at the Karl Ferdinand University in Prague . In 1925 he was the first doctor in Czechoslovakia to receive his doctorate sub summis auspiciis praesidentis . After training in pathology , he came to the German Surgical University Clinic in Prague that same year, where he completed his habilitation in 1936 . With a state scholarship, he completed a longer study visit with the neurosurgeon Herbert Olivecrona in Stockholm. In 1937 he took over the management of the German Surgical University Clinic (initially informally).

In 1941, Dick was appointed adjunct professor . He was in 1942 as a senior surgeon to Prague's Bulovka Hospital, at the time of Prague largest clinic in the emergency operation of Reinhard Heydrich involved. In 1945 he and his family fled to the West. In 1946 he became head of the Carinthian regional hospital in Klagenfurt, where he was appointed court advisor. In 1950, Dick became a full professor of surgery at the II University Clinic in Cologne . There was a strict speaking ban in his operating room, as the surgeon Ernst Kern , who was influenced by him, acknowledged. From 1955 until his retirement in 1967, Dick was a full professor of surgery at the University of Tübingen .

Walter Dick was a member of the Leopoldina from 1960 .

His son of the same name was Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Basel .
