Walter Ebrecht

Walter Ebrecht (born March 27, 1910 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , † May 24, 1978 in Austria ) was a Protestant theologian and from 1969 to 1975 church president of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate .

Life

Walter Ebrecht was born the son of a civil servant. After attending primary school, he attended secondary school in his hometown, where he graduated from high school in 1929. He then studied theology at the University of Heidelberg . From 1934 Ebrecht was parish administrator in Iggelheim, then vicar in Ludwigshafen. Here he headed the Evangelical Association for Child Aid and Welfare. In 1937 he went to Hessheim as a pastor and from 1939 he took over the management of the Protestant nursing home in Rockenhausen.

In the Second World War had Ebrecht do his military service. After the war he took over pastorships in Dielkirchen and Waldfischbach, before he was elected dean of the church district of Germersheim in 1949. He was also in charge of the student pastoral office of the Evangelical Student Congregation of the International and Interpreting Institute (ADI) of the University of Mainz , which at that time was based in Germersheim.

In 1954 Ebrecht was appointed to the senior church council in the regional church office of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate in Speyer, where in 1961 he worked for the Evangelical Relief Organization. In 1964 he became the deputy of Church President Theodor Schaller . When he retired in 1969, Ebrecht ran as his successor. His opponent was the later church president Heinrich Kron . But Ebrecht was only able to prevail in the 12th ballot after Kron had renounced another candidacy.

After reaching retirement age in 1975, Ebrecht retired. The regional synod then elected Heinrich Kron as his successor. Ebrecht died while on vacation in Austria.

Honors

Ebrecht received the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1973 .
