Walter Foots Thomas
Walter "Foots" Thomas (* 1907 in Muskogee (Oklahoma) ; † August 26, 1981 in New York City ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , flute , arrangement ) and band leader.
“Foots” Thomas, brother of saxophonist Joe Thomas , came to New York in 1927 and worked for a time at Jelly Roll Morton . In 1929 he became a member of the Missourians , after which he moved to the Cab Calloway Orchestra. In 1943 he left the band to work with Don Redman . In 1944 he took part in the Savoy Sessions of the Cozy Cole All Stars and recorded some 78s under his own name with an all-star band, including Coleman Hawkins , Budd Johnson , Ben Webster Clyde Hart , Oscar Pettiford and Milt Hinton belonged to. Since the 1940s he lived in Englewood, New Jersey . In the later years he worked full-time as a manager and was also a mentor to Jackie McLean .
