Walter Girardi (born April 16, 1976 in Schio ) is a former Italian ski racer . The two-time Italian champion was junior vice world champion in 1995 in combination and celebrated four victories in the European Cup . From 1997 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2009 he also competed in the Ski World Cup .
biography
Girardi gained his first international experience at the Junior World Championship in Lake Placid in 1994 , and a year later he was able to achieve second place in the combined ranking at the Junior World Championship in Voss in 1995 . Without major successes in the European Cup , he started in the World Cup for the first time in January 1997 . In the first years of the World Cup he only took part in giant slalom and some slalom races. The Italian achieved his first World Cup points on February 27, 1999 with rank 17 in the giant slalom in Ofterschwang , a few days later he celebrated his first victory in the European Cup. On January 9, 2001, he was able to get World Cup points for the second time in the giant slalom in Adelboden with 19th place. In more than four years, however, these were his only two results and so at the end of 2001 he was excluded from the national squad due to lack of success and could no longer start in the World Cup.
In the following years Girardi increasingly specialized in the fast downhill and super-G disciplines. In the 2004/05 European Cup season he was able to celebrate two victories in the Super-G and another three times on the podium, won the Super-G classification and came third in the overall classification. From December 2004 he also took part in World Cup races again and now started exclusively in the speed competitions. He was able to place himself in the points more often and also achieve several results among the top 20. His best results are 13th place in the Super-G of Hinterstoder on December 20th, 2006 and 15th place in the Super-G of Val Gardena on December 14th, 2007.
In June 2009 Girardi announced his resignation.
