Walter Groth (veterinarian)

Walter Ludwig Groth (born November 13, 1921 in Saarbrücken ; † September 17, 1989 in Freising-Hohenbachern ) was a German veterinarian.

Life

Walter Groth was born as the son of the Bonn civil servant Engelhardt Groth. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and took part in the Second World War as an artilleryman, from October 1920 in the rank of lieutenant in the reserve. He was wounded several times and seriously. As war awards, he received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class, the assault badge and the wound badge in silver. Released from British captivity in September 1945, he began studying veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover in the winter semester 1945/46 . In 1946 he became a member of the Corps Normannia Hanover . In July 1950 he received his veterinary license . After an internship at the cattle clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover, he was promoted to Dr. med. vet. PhD.

After completing his doctorate, Groth worked as an assistant in veterinary practices in Westerstede and Süderbrarup as well as a practical veterinarian in Niederstein in the Fritzlar-Homberg district , before joining the Pathological Institute of the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover as a scientific assistant in October 1952. In 1954 he became a veterinary pathologist at the industrial-hygienic-pharmacological institute of BASF in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . In 1955 he moved to the Institute for Anatomy and Physiology of Pets at the University of Bonn as a research assistant , where he qualified as a professor in 1959. He became a private lecturer and later professor for anatomy and physiology of domestic animals at the University of Bonn. He was appointed to the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture at the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan , where he was full professor and director of the chair for animal hygiene and animal science until his death.

Groth published on topics related to the anatomy and pathology of domestic animals and on aspects of the health of domestic animals. He was a member of the German Society for Pathology and the German Veterinary Society .
