Eliskases believed to have found a forced profit path:
- 23.Rd5xe5
- That wins two minor pieces against a tower, but now the black towers are dangerous. However, Eliskases believed she would come first.
- 23.… Rd8 – d1 +
- 24. Kg1-h2 f6xe5
- 25. Rf4xg4 Rf8-f1
- Now Weiss can only cover the threatening mate on h1 by sacrificing pieces. The counterattack followed:
- 26. Be4-d5 +
- On 26.… Kg8 – f8? 27. Rg4 – f4 + !! plus exchange of rooks (27.… e5xf4 ?? 28. Qc3 – h8 #) or 26.… Kg8 – g7? 27. Qc3xe5 + Qe7xe5 28. Bb2xe5 + Kg7 – h6 29. Rg4 – h4 + White fends off the threat of mate and wins with his material advantage.
- 26.… Qe7 – f7 !!
- Henneberger found the only parade. The queen's sacrifice breaks the white resistance to the mating threat. Now Eliskases for his part could have saved the game with a rook sacrifice, the following white move is a serious mistake:
- 27. Bd5xf7 + ?? Kg8 – f8!
- There is no more chess - Eliskases gave up on the mate on h1. However, with the eviction victim he would have 27.Rg4xg6 +! Kg8 – f8! 28. g3 – g4 can lift the mate threat and secure the draw : After 28.… Qf7xg6 Black has two qualities more, but 29. Qc3xe5 leads to a forced draw, there is a threat of permanent check, initiated with Qb8 +, the strong pair of bishops cuts the black King the escape squares on the kingside .
