Walter Klemm (born December 2, 1947 ) is a former German football player who played from 1966 to 1973 for Halleschen FC Chemie in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR football . Klemm is a multiple GDR junior and young national player.

Athletic career

As a player in the soccer youth department of the SC Chemie Halle, Walter Klemm was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team in 1964. By 1966 he played twelve junior internationals, in which he was used either as a midfielder or defender. He was then taken over to the GDR youth national team , for which he played three international matches in 1967.

Hallesche FC Chemie, the successor to the soccer section of SC Chemie, appointed the 18-year-old Klemm for the first time for the 1966/67 season in its league squad. Halle's new coach Horst Sockoll used Klemm as a midfielder in the first league game. After three more attempts, he was only used as a defender in the closing stages of the season in six more point games. Meanwhile, Klemm also played in the fourth-class 2nd team. With this he rose in the season 1967/68 in the district league , in the upper league he played only three times in 1967/68. After Klemm did not appear in the league at all in 1968/69, he came under the new coach Walter Schmidt from the 13th to the 16th league match day of the 1969/70 season in four games in different positions. In contrast, he was in the 2nd team, which had since been promoted to the GDR league , with 18 missions and two goals more successful.

Klemm made his breakthrough in the major league in the 1970/71 season, when he only missed one of the 26 point games. Again he was used alternately in midfield and in defense. With the HFC he reached third place at the end of the season, the best placement for Halle in many years, with which the club qualified for the UEFA Cup 1971/72 . The first leg at home against PSV Eindhoven ended 0-0, with Klemm serving as defender. He was also part of the squad for the second leg, which did not take place, however, because the Halle residents no longer competed in the fire in their hotel because of their dead player Wolfgang Hoffmann. In the league, Klemm completed 24 games and increased his league goal rate with two goals to five hits. In the first half of the season 1972/73 he could only play two league games, but was in the second half of the season as a defender in all 13 matches. At the end of the season, the HFC had to relegate from the league. He was involved in the immediate resurgence with 20 of 22 point games and two promotion games. He then ended his career in high-class football at the age of 26.
