from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter L. Engl (born April 8, 1926 in Regensburg ) is a German physicist . He is professor emeritus for theoretical electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

After secondary school education studied Engl 1946-1949 physics at the Technical University of Munich , where in 1953 graduated as Dr. rer. nat. He did his habilitation in theoretical electrical engineering and measurement technology in 1961 at the Technical University of Karlsruhe . Engl also taught part-time here until 1963. Engl worked in industry from 1950 to 1963. He worked in the Wernerwerk for measurement technology at Siemens & Halske AG, most recently as head of the research laboratory.

Engl has been a full professor for theoretical electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University since 1963 and retired in 1991. In 1968 and 1969 he was dean of the faculty for electrical engineering and information technology at RWTH Aachen University .

In 1967, 1970, 1972 and 1980 Engl was visiting professor at the University of Arizona , Tucson, Stanford University and the University of Tokyo . He is a member of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) and the Engineering Academy of Japan. Engl was chairman of the German-Japanese Forum for Information Technology from 1984 to 1997 together with Professor Yanai (University of Tokyo).

Trivia

Engl represented the subject of theoretical electrical engineering. His corresponding examination in the electrical engineering course was known to be very difficult and notorious, also outside the faculty and partly outside of Aachen. For students who had passed all the other exams, but ultimately still did not pass theoretical electrical engineering towards the end of their studies, there was the joking designation "Diplom ohne Engl" or "Diplom oE", which is widely known in Aachen.
