Walter Lehmann (born September 16, 1878 in Berlin ; † February 7, 1939 there ) was a German American scholar .

Live and act

Walter Lehmann was born as the son of the privy councilor Gustav Lehmann and Johanna Wetzel. From 1898 he studied natural sciences and medicine and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . In 1903 he became a research assistant to Eduard Seler at the Ethnographic Museum in Berlin . From 1907 to 1909 he traveled from Panama to Mexico on behalf of the Museum, made voice recordings and ethnographic observations. In 1910 he became curator at the Ethnographic Museum in Munich . There he received his doctorate in ethnology in 1913 and qualified as a professor in 1915 in American language, folk and antiquity studies . In 1915 he became a private lecturer and in 1920 an associate professor at the University of Munich . In 1921 he switched to the ethnological research and teaching institute of the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin-Dahlem as director. After a research trip to Mexico and Guatemala in 1925 and 1926, he was director of the African, Oceanic and American collections of the Berlin Ethnological Museum from 1927. He was also a private lecturer at the university, but was retired early in 1934. From 1934 to 1936 he was visiting professor in Madrid and conducted archival studies there. After his return to Germany he prepared the publication of Aztec texts, many of which, however, were only published posthumously from his estate.

Lehmann conducted research in the areas of indigenous languages, archeology and ethnology of Central America. In 1920 he was the first to correctly identify the Tlapanec language context. He was a co-author of the source works on ancient American history . Part of his estate is in the Ibero-American Institute in Berlin.
