Life

Walter Markert grew up in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, where he graduated from high school. After serving as a soldier in World War II as a young man, he began his artistic training with a stone sculptor in Gerolzhofen (Mainfranken). This was followed by art studies with Paul Thesing in Darmstadt from 1947 to 1949 and from 1949 with Wilhelm Schnarrenberger at the Karlsruhe Art Academy .

In 1954 Walter Markert married the artist Rosmarien Weber . The artist couple had three children. After many years in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , where they were actively teaching art and sport at the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium, a new home with a studio was built in Battenberg in the Palatinate in 1975. Walter Markert described himself as a traditional painter: “My motifs also follow tradition. They are landscapes, figurative - mainly religious - and non-representational structures. I am aware of the time in which we live and what problems are pending. "

The artist's daughter, Roswitha Heid, writes about her father's late work: “In his late work, my father dealt a lot with religious themes, which he often structured based on medieval winged altars. In his painting style he used his typical, comma-like brushstrokes, often with a felt-tip pen, and only used the color in a reduced manner, often resulting in monochrome pictures. The suffering that my father had to endure after numerous strokes and ultimately sitting in a wheelchair with his leg amputated, he saw symbolically in the suffering of Christ. In addition to the religious images, non-representational images were also created. In some cases, with attached accessories, reach into the room like a collage. Here he takes up the collage, which also became the main criterion for his wife's works. "
