Walter Schaffartzik (born December 29, 1951 in Berlin ) is a German medic .

Life

Schaffartzik, who played for DTV Charlottenburg in the basketball league , studied human medicine and then worked from 1981 to the end of 1985 at the Steglitz University Hospital of the Free University of Berlin as an assistant doctor in anesthesiology and surgical intensive care medicine. In the spring of 1986 he worked as an assistant doctor in the diagnostic department of the Heckeshorn Lung Clinic of the Zehlendorf Municipal Hospital; from May 1986 to March 1988, Schaffartzik was again an assistant doctor in the staff of the Steglitz University Hospital and graduated from the Free University of Berlin during this time, namely in February 1987 completed his doctoral thesis with the title “Prospective study of the behavior of measured values ​​of functional diagnostics, in particular lung perfusion scintigraphy, in the course of treatment of slightly to moderately advanced, radiologically unilateral pulmonary tuberculosis”.

In March 1987 he became a senior physician, and a year later he completed his specialist training in anesthesiology.

In spring 1988 he left Berlin and went to the United States on a grant from the German Research Foundation , where he worked as a research assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of California, San Diego . In October 1990 Schaffartzik returned to the Steglitz University Clinic, and in November 1993 he became senior physician for anesthesiology and operative intensive care medicine. In May 1994 he completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin, the subject of his paper was "The influence of maximum physical stress on lung function, ventilation / perfusion distribution and lung tissue". He remained in office in Steglitz until 1997, and in September 1997 he moved to the Berlin Accident Hospital as Director of the Clinic for Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy . There he also became medical director.

In May 2001 Schaffartzik was appointed adjunct professor at the Free University of Berlin. As early as 1995 he worked at the Berlin Medical Association as an examiner for anesthesiology and the additional training in intensive care medicine, and since May 1994 also examiner for the state examination in human medicine. Between February 2005 and October 2009 he was chairman of the Berlin regional association of the German University Association . Schaffartzik sat on numerous committees and bodies, including the Medical Expert Group for Professional Law Matters of the Berlin Medical Association (from 2010), the Federal Advisory Board of the German Organ Transplantation Foundation (from November 2013), the Board of Directors of the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (from 2009) and was from 2008 Chairman of the Arbitration Board for Medical Liability Issues of the North German Medical Association.

He retired on December 31, 2017.
