Walter Schnell (engineer)
Walter Schnell (born November 8, 1924 in Darmstadt ; † April 12, 1999 there ) was a German physicist and professor for technical mechanics at the TH Darmstadt .
He had been married to the publisher's daughter Martha Schnell (born September 22, 1922 in Darmstadt, † September 1, 2014) since August 26, 1946 and had two sons with her. The older, Wolfgang Schnell (born March 5, 1947 in Darmstadt; † February 8, 1999 in Holzminden ), taught geotechnics at the Holzminden University of Applied Sciences and wrote several specialist books. The younger one, Jürgen Schnell , was a professor for solid construction and building construction at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern .
Schnell studied at the TH Darmstadt and did his doctorate in 1954 under Karl Marguerre (on the introduction of forces into the stiffened circular cylinder shell ). Subsequently, he worked at the DVL Institute for Strength at the Essen / Mülheim airfield, which was founded by Hans Ebner in 1956 . In 1961 Schnell completed his habilitation at Ebner at RWTH Aachen University (The thin-walled cone shell under axial and internal pressure). In 1963 he was offered the professorship for technical mechanics at the TH Darmstadt.
In 1968, he turned down a call from RWTH Aachen University for the Chair of Lightweight Construction at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Schnell is co-author (with Dietmar Gross and Werner Hauger ) of a widespread textbook on mechanics in four volumes that is being reissued with other authors.
The University of Siegen awarded him an honorary doctorate in engineering in 1993.
