The memorial commemorates the Scottish poet Walter Scott . Its pedestal was built in 1837 based on a design by the Scottish architect David Rhind . The statue of Walter Scott was designed by John Greenshields . Since Greenshields died in 1835, Alexander Handyside Ritchie implemented his design.
The neo-classical monument stands in a prominent position in the center of George Square opposite Glasgow City Hall . It is a high Doric column that rests on a Greek-classical pedestal with an unadorned plinth . The detailed ornamented pedestal is designed with lion heads and an anthemic frieze . The fluted column is very finely worked. A cylindrical base for Scott's statue rests on it. The larger-than-life stone sculpture shows Scott standing dressed in a plaid .
