Walter Spoerri

Walter Spoerri (born December 2, 1927 in Colmar ; † March 25, 2016 in Saint-Blaise NE ) was a Swiss classical philologist .

Life

Walter Spoerri attended the Lycee Bartholdi in Colmar and studied Classical Philology at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1953 . From 1955 to 1961 he worked as a research assistant at the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae research center in Hamburg. Since 1955 he wrote articles for the Lexicon of the Early Greek Epic . From 1959 he was also employed as an assistant at the Institute for Classical Philology at the University of Hamburg .

In 1961 Spoerri completed his habilitation in Hamburg. In the same year he was appointed as an associate professor at the University of Neuchâtel , where he was also head of the Department of Classical Philology. In 1962 he was appointed full professor. In 1993 he retired.

Spoerri dealt with wide areas of Greek literature. His main research interests include the historian Diodorus , the metaphysics of Aristotle and its connection with the Corpus Hippocraticum as well as the natural sciences and geography of antiquity.
