The University of Neuchâtel ( French Université de Neuchâtel ) is a public university and was founded in 1909 in Neuchâtel , Switzerland . It has four faculties .
history
The university goes back to an academy founded in 1838 by Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, then Prince of Neuchâtel, which was closed by the Grand Council in 1848 , reopened in 1866 and converted into a university in 1909.
The number of students at the University of Neuchâtel has been growing steadily for several years; it is thus following a general trend across Switzerland.

Today the university has around 4200 students and 587 academic staff with 117 professorships . Around 55 percent of the students are female.
There are four faculties:
- Humanities and human sciences ( Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines )
- Natural Sciences (Faculté des Sciences)
- Law (Faculté de Droit)
- Economics (Faculté des Sciences Economiques)
The main building, which houses part of the administration and the Faculté des Sciences économiques et sociales as well as part of the Faculté de Droit , as well as the building of the Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines are located directly on Lake Neuchâtel .
With around 2,000 students, the Faculté des Lettres et Sciences Humaines is the university's largest faculty. It offers degrees in English studies , archeology , ethnology , geography , German studies , history , journalism , classical philology , art history , linguistics , pedagogy , philosophy , psychology , Romance studies and sociology .
Until it closed in July 2015, there was also a theological faculty (Faculté de Théologie) for studying Protestant theology . With that, La Chair et le Souffle also presented. Revue internationale de théologie et de philosophie , the faculty's magazine, began its publication.

The University of Neuchâtel has an international reputation for its institutes for biology , ethnology, health law, microtechnology and the Groupe de Recherche en Économie Territoriale (GRET)

In its action plan for 2013–2016, the University of Neuchâtel defines nine different competence centers in the field of research and innovation. They are:

The various competence centers are characterized by their interdisciplinary and inter-faculty character and crystallize the knowledge base that characterizes the University of Neuchâtel.

The annual budget in 2014 was around 142 million CHF, of which 18 million came from subsidies and third-party funds. On February 5, 2007, the rector Alfred Strohmeier was dismissed without notice. The cantonal government appointed Jean-Pierre Derendinger as rector ad interim . With Martine Rahier was from summer 2008 to August 2016, the first rector of Romandie in office, followed by Kilian Stoffel.
