Martine Rahier , also Martine Rowell-Rahier, (born June 27, 1954 in Belgium ) is a Belgian professor of animal ecology and entomology and until the end of 2016 rector of the University of Neuchâtel .

Life

Martine Rahier studied agricultural science with a specialization in applied zoology at the Université libre de Bruxelles and graduated as an agricultural engineer in 1977. At Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley , she continued her studies from 1979 to 1980 and specialized in animal biology. She received her PhD in 1983 at the University of Basel for Doctor of Science and was in the same year a son. 1993 followed the habilitation in ecology at the University of Zurich . In 1994 she was appointed full professor of entomology ( entomology ) and animal ecology at the University of Neuchâtel and in May 2008 she became the first woman in western Switzerland to be elected president of the university. She held this office until the end of 2016.

Rahier researches the interaction between insects and plants. Early on in her scientific research she focused on the alpine leaf beetle genus Oreina cacaliae as a model organism . The beetle is able to convert poisonous alkaloids from its forage plant into a poison that covers its shell in case of danger. Internationally recognized for her research, in 2001 she initiated the national research focus Plant Survival , which she headed until 2008. The interdisciplinary network based in Neuchâtel consists of 200 employees at twelve Swiss locations. The aim is to guarantee biodiversity in natural areas and to find solutions for sustainable agriculture.

From 2013 to the end of 2015 Martine Rahier was President of Swissuniversities - the joint body of the Swiss universities. In April 2015 she was elected to the European University Association (EUA; German "European University Association", the largest association of European universities with around 850 members from 47 countries in the European Higher Education Area) and confirmed for a further four-year term in 2019.

Rahier is a member of numerous national and international bodies and commissions, such as the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS; German National Center for Scientific Research ) in Paris.

Awards

In March 2005 she was awarded the Prize of the Fondation pour le rayonnement de Neuchâtel for her scientific merits , and in 2006 she was awarded the Doron Prize .
