Walther Abel
Walther Abel (born October 11, 1906 in Berlin ; † September 4, 1987 there ) was a German classical philologist .
Life
Walther Abel studied classical philology at the Berlin University , where he was particularly influenced by Werner Jaeger , Eduard Norden and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff . In 1930 he was with the dissertation The forms of address at the Roman elegiac poets doctorate in 1931 he passed the state examination for teachers at secondary schools. However, he did not go to school, but to the Prussian State Library in Berlin, where he completed his training as a scientific librarian, which he completed in 1933 with the assessor's thesis The Treatment of Plato's Apology and the specialist examination. On January 1, 1939, he was employed as a regular librarian, and in 1941 he was given the title of Library Councilor. In 1942 he joined the Archaeological Society in Berlin .
After the end of the Second World War , Abel left the library service in 1945. In 1946 he got a job as a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Studies at the University of Göttingen . Two years later he switched to the school service and taught Latin and Greek at various Berlin high schools. From 1956 to 1972 he was the headmaster at the Gymnasium Steglitz . In 1963 he also became a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin . Until 1984 he held courses in the subjects of Classical Philology, Archeology and Ancient History .
In addition to his professional activity in the library, school and academic service, Abel dealt with philological research. He has written numerous essays and reviews (including in the Deutsche Literaturzeitung and in the Gnomon ), articles for the Realencyclopädie and autobiographical writings about his academic teachers. He also edited the third edition of the work Euripides Herakles by his teacher Wilamowitz (Berlin 1933) and the Bibliotheca philologica classica (1935–1938), the bibliographic supplement to the annual report on the progress of classical antiquity .
