Pieter Jan Herman Fredrik (Wam) Kat (born November 23, 1956 in Zeist ) is a Dutch chef who has lived in Germany since 1995. He has become known nationwide for his peace work in the Balkan conflict and as a mobile cook for demonstrators.

Life

Wam Kat is the son of the Dutch sculptor Frits Kat (1922–1975) and grew up in Zeist .

He originally came to cook because he took part in the ship's kitchen on the Greenpeace ship “ Rainbow Warrior ”. There he learned, according to his own statement, that the kitchen is the center of living together, which is an essential part of the atmosphere of a group. Kat was a co-founder of the Dutch rolling vegetarian kitchen Rampenplan , which has been providing food and other services to political activists during longer campaigns since the early 1980s.

He worked during the Yugoslav wars in Za Mir Network with. (“Network for Peace”). He published the Zagreb Diaries he wrote , first in English in the form of a blog , then as a printed book, which was translated into German and Finnish. In 1995 he moved to ZEGG , a municipality in Bad Belzig in Fläming, Brandenburg . He left the community again and now lives in Weitzgrund near Belzig. In Belzig he started the info café Der Winkel , a center for tolerance and better understanding of different cultures, and an example of local actions against right-wing violence.

In 1999 Kat co-founded Balkan Sunflowers (“Balkan Sunflowers ”), a humanitarian and social volunteer organization during and after the Kosovo war that organized leisure activities, schools and social programs for war refugees in refugee camps in Croatia and Bosnia.

After an interview in the taz in 2008, he published the cookbook 24 Recipes for Culinary World Improvement in the same year . The ZEIT reviewer called 24 recipes a "left-wing and a fairly interesting [cookbook] if you manage to break away from the bourgeois chimera of good taste and understand food as a political act".

In 2008, Wam Kat was elected to the city ​​council of Bad Belzig with 444 votes , where he was a non-party member of the four-person parliamentary group of the Left for one term . In 2010 he and ten other people were involved in the preparation of the Ecotopia summer festival .

In 2011 Wam Kat founded the mobile kitchen “Fläming Kitchen”. He played himself in the 80-minute documentary Wastecooking by David Gross and Georg Misch (Austria / Germany 2015). For the globalization-critical traveling documentary film festival Globale , he acted as an expert interlocutor for the audience of the film.
