The Wanderzünsler ( Nomophila noctuella ) is a butterfly from the family of Crambidae .

features

The brownish colored moths reach a wingspan of 26–32 mm. When at rest the butterfly appears very elongated and slender and is therefore unmistakable. The forewings have two major flaws in the disk region and one major flaw in the post-disk region .

distribution

The butterfly species occurs in the Palearctic and Palaeotropic . In Europe the species shows a migratory behavior. In spring, the butterflies fly from the Mediterranean to Central Europe.

Way of life

The migrant borer that immigrated from the south and the wintering moth fly between May to August, while the moths of the new generation can be observed from August to the end of October. The butterflies are attracted by light sources at night. The caterpillars feed on clover ( Trifolium ), alfalfa ( Medicago sativa ), knotweed ( Polygonum aviculare ), wheat ( Triticum ), blueberries ( Vaccinium ) and various types of grass ( Poa ). They usually pupate in a cocoon that is attached to the leaves of their forage plants. The species usually hibernates as a pupa.
