The Wanneroo Road is a main road through the northern suburbs of Perth in the southwest of the Australian state of Western Australia . It connects the northern districts of Perth, Joondana and Yokine , with Lancelin Road in Woodridge .

course

The road begins about 4 km north of Perth city center, where Charles Street (S60) and Walcott Street / Green Street (S75) meet. It leads north-northwest through Tuart Hill, Nollamera, Westminster, Hamersley, Marangaroo, Wangara and Pearsall to the suburb of Wanneroo , after which it is named. Along the coast, to which it is repeatedly connected by short spur roads, the Wanneroo Road runs through the Yanchep National Park to Woodridge .

There it turns into Lancelin Road (S60), which leads to the town of the same name. There it becomes Indian Ocean Drive (S60), which meets the Brand Highway (R1) south of Dongara .

Short stretches of State Highways 81 and 83 also run along Wanneroo Road.

history

After the Road Districts Act came into force in 1871, the Perth Road Board required the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia to designate eight thoroughfares through its territory, and on June 4, 1872, Route No. 3 a route from Perth to Champion Bay (now Geraldton ) via Wanneroo published in the government bulletin. However, it turned out that the construction of the road did not keep pace with the announcements. Only gradually was a way paved on this route.

Originally only a narrow, two-lane country road was built, which was widened piece by piece, especially north of Wanneroo . At Carabooda the road has also been re- routed over time. The remaining short pieces of the old, narrow street are now used as access roads to private and commercial properties along the street.
