War of the Roses was a multiplayer - Action Game of the Swedish game developer Fatshark . The game dealt with the Wars of the Roses between the two rival English noble houses York and Lancaster in late medieval England .

The game placed great emphasis on historical accuracy. The focus was on the combat system. It was released in Germany on October 5, 2012 for Windows .

The game's servers were shut down in 2017 due to insufficient number of players and are no longer playable. A Lan mode was not implemented because there are no more developers working on the game.

Gameplay

War of the Roses was played from the third person perspective with up to 64 players per game or server . The game mechanics were based heavily on the Battlefield series .

There were four pre-made classes. The player started with the foot servant. Later in the game, the longbow archer, guardsman and foot knight (dismounted knight) could be unlocked using experience points collected in multiplayer battles.

The player could also unlock a total of eight of his own classes using game currency and equip them with primary and secondary weapons, daggers, armor ( gambeson , cuirass , plate armor , etc.) and helmets / headgear and adapt them with specialized, class-specific talents. A class of knights with a war horse with or without a horse armor could also be created. It was possible to customize your class in the main menu and between multiplayer battles. It was also possible to create an individual coat of arms including a helmet ornament, which the play figure wore on the shield and armor or the helmet.

The weapons, their materials, blade grinding and fighting style ( German fencing school , Milan fencing school, English fencing school) can be adapted to your own style of play. For example, a weapon wielded in the Milanese fighting style was faster but did less damage than with the style of the slower German fencing school.

The combat system was controlled by keyboard and mouse. Various factors had to be taken into account in order to damage the opponent; in order to deal more damage, one had to strike hard and strike. The shafts of the polearms do not injure the enemy, but at best only stun them for a short time. So you had to be careful to strike precise blows with the blades, ax blades, etc. against the enemy. Shooting as an archer, crossbowman and hand gunner was conducted from the first-person perspective .
