The Warhammer Fantasy RPG (WHFRS, WFRP or WFRPG) is a pen & paper RPG that takes place in the fictional Warhammer Fantasy world, which is reminiscent of Europe in the late Middle Ages , but in which magic is and also is real Elves , orcs , dwarves and other mythical creatures live.

Control system

The rule system is similar to the strategy game of the same name in order to facilitate a combination (e.g. to re-enact battles with miniatures). The player chooses between human, elf, dwarf or halfling . There are no character classes or levels in the classic sense. Instead, so-called “careers” are used, which provide a framework for the character's abilities and which can then be increased in the further course. If you have fulfilled all the requirements of a career, you can turn to a new one in order to improve further. The easiest way to measure a character's experience and relative power is by looking at the number of careers they have completed. The characteristics of a character consist of so-called "characteristics" and "skills". In addition, there are “talents”, which generally give bonuses to existing skills or describe advantages of the character (e.g. night vision or immunity to fear). The combat system is simple, but becomes more complex through a variety of possible actions. Many aspects are optional enough to allow each group to tailor it to their own preferences. Magic is rare and a curse and a blessing at the same time. It takes a long time for a character to gain power in this area.

1st edition

In 1986 the first edition of WHFRS was published. The role-playing game was based on the 1983 tabletop game Warhammer Fantasy Battle and set itself apart from many other systems mainly due to the gloomy game world and the fast and deadly combat system. Another special feature is the naming of cities and people, since the English-speaking authors prefer to use German names. A number of game additions and adventures have been released over time, including the Character Pack for customizing player characters, several background books such as: B. Warhammer City , which describes the city of Middenheim and the multi-volume Enemy Within campaign.

In 1997 the publishing house Schwarzes Einhorn from Münster brought a German translation of the first edition onto the market. The basic set of rules and the supplementary volume From the Emperor 's Archives were published. In addition, the campaign The Inner Enemy was published with the volumes Under False Names / Shadows over Bögenhafen , Death on the Reik and The Gray Eminence . The publishing house ceased operations in 2000.

2nd edition

In 2005 the second edition of WHFRS was published. Under the leadership of Green Ronin, the set of rules was fundamentally revised. Although WHFRS remained true to the old game principles under the new publisher, so that old players found it easy to adopt the new system, many suggestions and changes were incorporated into the second edition. In 2006 the second edition was published in German by Feder und Schwert Verlag .

Some of the most important changes in the overview:

  • Reduction of the attributes and conversion to a general W100 system also for strength and resistance.
  • All attributes are only increased in 5% steps.
  • Introduction of the D10 as a damage cube for all branches of service.
  • Revision and expansion of character careers.
  • Change of the talent system or introduction of additional skills. Basically, you can distinguish these by the fact that skills can be increased up to three times, while talents can only be learned once.
  • Revised combat system (no less deadly than the old system)
  • Fundamental revision of the magic system. Spells are no longer paid for with magic points, but are given a level of difficulty that must be rolled with the new magic attribute, taking into account various talents, skills and circumstances. An interesting aspect here is the introduction of Tzeentch's curse, or the wrath of God, which comes into play as soon as a player rolls a double in the magic test. The division of magic into the various teachings, as already from the tabletop , as well as the introduction of rituals complete the whole thing.
  • The background world has been adapted to the current Warhammer storyline. It is set after the "Storm of Chaos".

3rd edition

From 2009 to 2014 the third edition of Fantasy Flight Games was published. In this edition, the game principle has been fundamentally changed. In contrast to the usual dice (D6 or D10 / W100) the new system uses dice with symbols. In addition to the rule books, various cards for informing the players (character values, skills, etc.) have also been introduced.

The third edition has been published by Heidelberger Spieleverlag since October 2011 . In contrast to the English version, it is not marketed as a box, but as books and so-called "arsenals" containing materials such as tables, career sheets, talent cards, action cards as well as markers and displays.

In September 2016, Fantasy Flight Games announced that it would end its collaboration with Games Workshop, which includes the release of the Warhammer fantasy role-playing game.

4th edition

In 2017, the English publisher Cubicle 7 announced that it would be releasing a fourth edition of the Warhammer fantasy role-playing game, which is based more on the first and second edition. The PDF of the basic rules was published on August 24, 2018. The publishing house Ulisses Spiele has the license for translations and plans to publish the basic German rules in the course of 2019.

Unlike the previous edition changes, the fourth edition does not take place in a later period than the previous one, but at roughly the same time as the first, around the year 2510 of the Imperial Calendar.

History of origin

The first edition was published in 1986 by Games Workshop , the publication rights were then sold to Flame Publications and then Hogshead Publishing, only to revert to Games Workshop at the end of 2002 after the contracts expired. In 1997 the basic rules, some source books and the three-volume campaign The Inner Enemy were published in German by the Schwarzes Einhorn publishing house (which no longer exists). A second edition is being distributed by Black Industries , produced by Green Ronin Publishing. Black Industries an RPG publisher founded by Games Workshop, specifically for the distribution of Warhammer fantasy RPG and expansions. The German edition was published by pen and sword . In January 2008, the production of games at Black Industries was stopped. The company's homepage has also been discontinued.
