So-called warning thresholds have been used on motorways since July 2008 , which are intended to warn vehicle drivers of an upcoming obstacle in their lane .

The warning thresholds are, among other things, part of a warning system in front of daily construction sites on the motorways of North Rhine-Westphalia. You are collision protection with the site safety vehicle and active protection of the most nightly repair work on guardrails , and other repair measures as day construction site . They point out that the lane occupied by them ends 100 to 150 meters away and that traffic has to merge into one of the remaining lanes in good time. In the opinion of the State Office for Road Construction North Rhine-Westphalia, the new warning thresholds are an effective instrument to protect road users , road attendants and workers from traffic accidents in front of the construction sites.

According to the Federal Highway Research Institute, the warning thresholds can be crossed by any vehicle and at any speed. They are made of flexible plastic material, three centimeters high, 23 centimeters wide, two meters long and equipped with reflectors so that they can be easily seen even in the dark.
