Warsan Shire

Warsan Shire ( Somali Warsan Shireh , Arabic ورسان شرى) (born in Kenya in 1988 ) is a Somali- British author who became known for her poetry . She is the recipient of the Brunel University African Poetry Prize.

life and work

Warsan Shire was born in Kenya in 1988 to Somali parents. When she was one year old she moved to England with her family. The poet graduated with a bachelor's degree in creative writing. She has had her main residence in London since 2015.

In 2011, Warsan Shire published the collection of poems Teaching My Mother How To Give Birth by flipped eye . A larger volume of poetry is to be published by the same publisher in 2016. In the meantime, poems from Beyoncé's debut volume have been used as intertexts on her album Lemonade , which was released in April 2016 .

Warsan Shire was invited to readings around the world and read her texts in Germany, Italy, North America, South Africa and Kenya, among others. Her poems have appeared in numerous magazines such as the Poetry Review , Magma and Wasafiri ., As well as the anthologies Salt Book of Younger Poets (Salt, 2011) and Ten: The New Wave (Bloodaxe, 2014). The texts have been translated into several languages, including Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish and Danish.

Warsan Shire is the poetry editor at SPOOK magazine and gives poetry workshops worldwide and online with a therapeutic and aesthetic background.

Awards

Warsan Shire has received multiple awards for her art. In April 2013 she received the first African Poetry Prize from Brunel University . This prize is given to poets who have not yet published their own complete book. A shortlist of six favorites was drawn up from 655 submissions, from which Warsan Shire was selected as the winner.

In October 2013, Warsan Shire was named the first Young Poet Laureate for London . The award is part of the London Legacy Development Corporation 's Spoke Program to promote the arts and culture in and around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park .

2014 Warsan Shire for was poet in residence of Queensland appointed. In this context she spent six weeks at the Aboriginal Center for Performing Arts in Queensland.

2019 it was included in the anthology New Daughters of Africa by Margaret Busby added.
