The Wartbergsteige is a street in the northeast of Heilbronn . The 1373 introduction to a sunken road is the original direct path to the top of the Heilbronn local mountain Wartberg . The historical part of the Wartbergsteige is a listed building .
course
Today's Wartbergsteige branches off from Schickhardtstraße to the northeast in the direction of the Wartberg summit and leads almost in a straight line to the northeast up over the buildings a bit into the vineyards, before it joins the modern network of agricultural roads in the vineyards after a left bend. It also forms the extension of the Wartbergstrasse, which begins at the Old Cemetery on Weinsberger Strasse, but is not drivable all the way to Wartbergsteige, but is only a footpath between Friedrich-Ebertstrasse and Schickhardtstrasse. Historically, only the actual ravine was originally the Nordbergsteige or later the Wartbergsteige , while the southern part of what is now known as the street was originally part of the Wartbergstraße and was called Äussere Wartbergstraße from 1933 , before the current name was given in 1962.
In addition to the straight extension of the Wartbergstraße, the Wartbergsteige also includes a dead end road to the west between Gundelsheimer and Schickhardtstraße and the connecting path to the Raffeltersteige that turns east below the vineyards.
The southern part of the Wartbergsteige is surrounded by residential developments, which from the intersection with Gundelsheimer Straße to the north through high property walls increasingly takes on the character of a ravine, before the northern part of the street as a footpath and paved ravine finally already through the vineyards on the slope of the Wartbergs leads.
Cultural monument
The monument area of the Wartbergsteige, which was once far outside the historic city center and has only recently been surrounded by buildings, begins at the intersection with Gundelsheimer Strasse, where a Ruhbank with weathered dating 1795 (?) And a drinking trough have been preserved, giving people and cattle a break allowed on the ascent to the Wartberg. From there to the beginning of the vineyards, the high, but partly modern property walls on both sides of the road already give the character of a ravine.
From the transition to the vineyards, the Wartbergsteige has been preserved in its 19th century design. Old sandstone walls and old plants line the path on both sides. In the left bend at the upper end there is an old cellar house from 1875 with figural wall paintings and banners referring to viticulture . Further equipment includes various historical ironwork (archway, gate grille) as well as ornamental and coat of arms stones with grapes and the baker's guild sign.
In the hollow path section there is also the pair of inscription stones in which Mayor Paul Meyle responded in a humorous way in 1955 to the Swabian greeting from a dissatisfied building yard employee.
A few meters east of the sunken road section is located with the also as a cultural monument designated senior garden a historical gardens of the 1911th
