Why I am not a Muslim is the title of a book by the critic of Islam , which appears under the pseudonym Ibn Warraq , based on Bertrand Russell's book Why I am not a Christian .

The book contains a moral criticism of Islam , a historical-critical analysis and evaluation of the Koran and a historical-chronological presentation of the criminal history of Islam. According to Ibn Warraq, the reason for starting work on this book was the Salman Rushdie affair . In his opinion, the western world watched helplessly as Ayatollah Khomeini issued the death fatwa against Salman Rushdie .

In 17 chapters, the book describes, among other things, the Salman Rushdie affair and deals with the origins of Islam and the problems of Islamic sources. The Prophet Mohammed and his message, the Koran, are presented. Ibn Warraq shows what he believes is the totalitarian nature of Islam and deals with the question of whether Islam is compatible with democracy and human rights . It also describes Arab imperialism , Islamic colonization and the position of non-Muslim subjects . Further topics are heresy and heterodoxy, atheism and free-thinking , principles and changes in Islam as well as the influence of Greek philosophy and science on Islam and the difference between Sufism and Islamic mysticism . In addition to Al-Ma'arri , the position of women in Islam and the prohibitions of Islam (wine, pork and homosexuality ) are discussed. The book concludes with an assessment of the person of Muhammad and the position of Islam in the West.
