Warwick Tucker
Warwick Tucker (* 1970 in Sydney ) is a Swedish-Australian mathematician .
Tucker received his PhD from Uppsala University in 1998 ( The Lorenz Attractor exists ). He then worked as a post-doc at IMPA in Rio de Janeiro and from 2000 was Assistant Professor at Cornell University . From 2002 he was back in Uppsala, where he became a lecturer in 2004. In 2007 he became head of a group on Computational Evidence in Analysis (CAPA) in Bergen .
In 2002 Tucker succeeded in solving an important open problem (put on his list of Smale problems by Stephen Smale ) of the theory of dynamic systems: the existence of the Lorenz attractor for the parameter values given by Edward Lorenz . The proof uses interval arithmetic and relies on massive computer use.
In 2001 he received the Wallenberg Prize of the Swedish Mathematical Society and in 2004 the EMS Prize (lecture: Validated Numerics for Pedestrians ).
