Washim is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra . The city is located in the eastern part of the state, near the geographic center of India.

The city is the administrative seat of the Washim district of the same name . Washim has municipal council status . The city is divided into 27 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census, it had 78,387 inhabitants, of which 40,262 were men and 38,125 were women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 63%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 89.09%, well above the national average.

Washim was formerly known as Vatsagulma and was the center of power of the Vakataka dynasty . King Sarvasena , the second son of Pravarsena I , founded the present city in the 3rd century.

Washim Railway Station is on the Purna to Khandwa line . Washim is connected to all major cities in Maharashtra by the state highways.
