The Washington Four Power Agreement was a ten-year treaty concluded on December 13, 1921 at the Washington Naval Conference between the United States , the United Kingdom and its Dominions , the French Republic and the Japanese Empire . In Article I, it provided for mutual respect for the island holdings of these powers in the Pacific . Articles I and II of the treaty set out the procedure for consultation in the event of a dispute between the powers involved or the interference of an uninvolved power. In Article IV of the treaty it was agreed that upon ratification the Anglo-Japanese alliance should expire.

In the further course of the conference, in addition to the actual naval agreement, a nine-power treaty on China followed.
