Wasgen Mikaelowitsch Manukjan ( Armenian Վազգեն Միքայելի Մանուկյան , Russian Вазген Микаэлович Манукян ; born February 13, 1946 in Leninakan , Armenian SSR ) is an Armenian politician who holds a Ph.D. in math and physics . He is chairman of the National Democratic Union party .

The Armenian Apostolic Christian was arrested in Moscow in 1988 for being a member of the Karabakh Committee and spent six months in prison. On August 13, 1990 he became Prime Minister of the Armenian SSR. After Armenia became independent in 1991, he resigned on November 22, 1991. Manukjan was Minister of Defense from 1992 to 1993. He was elected to parliament three times , running for the 1996, 1998, 2003 and 2008 presidential elections.

Wasgen Manukjan is married and has three children.
