The Cobenzl water tank is a listed tank in the Viennese water supply network . It is one of the few water tanks in the city of Vienna that has to be supplied with spring water via a pumping station ( Krapfenwaldl lift ).

The Cobenzl reservoir was built on the Cobenzl to secure the water supply to high-altitude parts of Grinzing , but also to individual objects in the Vienna Woods, between 1908 and 1909 according to plans by the Vienna City Building Office. In addition to various residential and guest houses, these objects also include the Krapfenwaldlbad .

The container structure, located near the urban Cobenzl winery, is a valve chamber construction in late historical-neo-baroque forms, stylistically based on the former Cobenzl Castle.

The brick building with rounded corners is flanked by curved ramps. The attic bears the building inscription. An arched door with a neo-baroque steel door leads into the inside of the container. The container is under monument protection because of the plastering technique ("stone plaster") that was applied here on a trial basis for a Viennese water container, which was used to create the impression of a natural stone facade with little effort.

The construction of this reservoir began earlier than the schedule for the construction of the second Viennese spring water pipeline actually provided, as the hotel and restaurant business that existed at the time was to be expanded. In order to still be able to fill the container with drinking water, a temporary pumping station had to be built, which was around 43 meters lower than the final lift on the area of the Krapfenwald water container.

Since the planned supply area for the construction of the water reservoir had only a low water consumption, parts of Cobenzlgasse were also supplied from here by a newly constructed pipeline from 1910. The reason for this was the more efficient operation of the elevator.

Between June 2006 and September 2007, the Cobenzl container was renovated or partially rebuilt while operations continued at a cost of around 1.1 million euros. The previous container volume was increased from officially around 1,000 cubic meters (actually usable, however, only around 760 cubic meters) to around 1,500 cubic meters of usable container volume through the new construction of the two container chambers, without increasing the base area of the container. In the course of this work, pipes, fittings and new power and data cables were also laid.

With the help of laser scans and orthophotographic recordings made in cooperation with MA 41 - City Surveying, a complete three-dimensional model of the container and facade views could be created, which were used to create geometrically precise plans for the restoration of broken facade parts.
