geography

The Latisberg is a 492 meter high mountain between the Reisenberg and the Vogelsangberg . It lies in a northeastern foothill of the Eastern Alps and is geologically part of the flysch zone , which is composed of quartz and sand-lime stones , marl and other sediments .

history

The mountain was first mentioned in 1354 as leydasperg and 1355 as Laidersperch . The exact origin of the name is unclear, the most likely derivation takes as the oldest form Leiderâtes perc , which would go back to the old man's name Leiderât (the one who advises in suffering). The Latisberg got its nickname Cobenzl from Count Johann Philipp Cobenzl , who bought the offshore Reisenberg in the 18th century . As a music lover, Count Philipp von Cobenzl often invited Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to his castle, who immediately felt inspired by the view of this place. Mozart wrote the following words to his father Leopold Mozart in a letter: "... the beautiful view from Cobenzl to the city of Vienna, but I have an hour and a half to walk to my baroness, whom I have to teach here ...".

Others

Today the Latisberg is easy to reach with the bus line 38A . From the “Cobenzl Parking Lot” stop, a hiking trail leads below the summit to the “Bei der Kreuzeiche” crossroads. The Latisberg is also the location of the Cobenzl water reservoir, which was built between 1908 and 1909 .

From 1955 to 2016 the magnetic field of the earth was measured at the geomagnetic Cobenzl observatory of the ZAMG .
