Philipp von Cobenzl
Philipp Graf von Cobenzl (also: Johann Philipp Graf Cobenzl , Johann Baptist Philipp Anton Maria ) (* May 28 or (March 28) 1741 in Laibach ; † August 30, 1810 in Vienna ) was an Austrian statesman .
Life
Johann Philipp was the first of five children of the k. k. Kämmerer's Guidobald (also Guido) Count Cobenzl (* 1716 in Laibach; † 1797 in Görz ), from the ancient Carinthian noble family Cobenzl , and his wife Maria Anna Benigna, Countess of Montrichier (1720-1793), who was married to him in 1739 ; his brother Johann Ludwig Carl Graf Cobenzl , who followed in 1743 , became provost of the cathedral in Eichstätt . He grew up on his father's castle Lueg (today Predjama Castle ).
Philipp Graf Cobenzl accompanied together with Count Joseph Colloredo-Mels the Emperor Joseph II. On his trip to France from April 1 to August 2, 1777. Immediately after he traveled as ambassador to Berlin , but could the entry of Prussia in the War of Bavarian Succession not prevent. In 1779 he concluded the Treaty of Teschen , with which the War of the Bavarian Succession came to an end. He was Vice State Chancellor from 1779 to 1793, and from the end of 1792 he was State Chancellor as successor to Kaunitz . Cobenzl had to hand over the management of the State Chancellery to Franz Maria von Thugut at the end of March 1793 because of the failures of the second partition of Poland . After his resignation he became chancellor for the Italian provinces. Cobenzl was ambassador to Paris from 1801 to 1805 .
In 1776 he acquired a site on the Reisenberg and had the Jesuit houses there converted into a country house. Contemporaries praised the garden laid out by Cobenzl in the English style with numerous wooden staffage structures. In 1809, parts of the complex were destroyed by the French army. In the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, the former Cobenzl country house was converted into a castle. A later building is known today as Cobenzl Castle . In the 18th century, the count used the place to regularly invite contemporary artists. Including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , who felt strongly inspired by this place.
Count Johann Philipp von Cobenzl was the last of his line. He is buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof .
His cousin Johann Ludwig Graf Cobenzl was envoy to various European courts and from 1801 to 1805 foreign minister of the Austrian hereditary lands.
Honor
In 1792 he became a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .
In 1894, Cobenzlgasse in Vienna- Döbling (19th district) was named after him.
