Water tank

The Krapfenwaldl water tank is a drinking water tank in the Vienna water supply network at Krapfenwaldgasse 28 in the 19th district of Döbling .

history

Originally, Grinzing , Heiligenstadt and Nussdorf were supplied from the drinking water pipeline that leads in a free gradient from the end of the second Viennese spring water pipeline in Mauer over around 17 kilometers to the Hungerberg water reservoir in Grinzinger Allee.

As this situation was perceived as disadvantageous, the Krapfenwaldl tank was built between 1924 and 1925. On this occasion, a new pumping station was built on the site of the drinking water reservoir, from which the Cobenzl water tank was to be supplied. Until now, this water tank had been fed with water from a temporary pumping station built in 1908/1909 at Krapfenwaldgasse 10, around 43 meters below.

Of the three water tanks in Vienna that were damaged during World War II, the Krapfenwaldl water tank was the hardest hit.

description

The system was built by the Vienna City Planning Department according to plans by the architect Friedrich Jäckel together with the technicians Franz Schönbrunner, Ludwig Machek, Anton Zaubek and Rudolf Teufelbauer.

Water tank

The Krapfenwaldl water tank has a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters in its two underground tank chambers, each with 6 × 4 columns made of reinforced concrete and a vaulted ceiling. The visible valve chamber was equipped with a gable roof and a gable front. The base zone, the entrance and the window crowns were made from conglomerate blocks. The maximum water level of the tank is around 295  m above sea level. A. , the maximum water depth of the container is five meters.

Elevator

The elevator is housed in a building with an 11 × 8 meter machine room as well as a workshop and an office in a dominant corner of the property. The house was built as a two-storey or one-storey villa-like building in the home style with a hipped roof and caterpillars . At the time of its construction there were three pump sets with an output of 20 liters per second each and a delivery head of around 150 meters.
