The Zilly moated castle is located in the district of Zilly (Teichdamm) of the Osterwieck community in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .
The moated castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century by Count Konrad III of Wernigerode . built as a permanent house .
The castle, which was built in several construction phases, has a 30 by 30 meter core castle with commercial, residential and representative buildings in the west wing, a tower, a keep and gatehouse as well as a 100 by 70 meter outer castle with another tower.
In the 17th century, the castle was expanded into a large agricultural estate under the direction of the Halberstadt cathedral dean Matthias von Oppen . The “colorful parlor” of the castle was furnished with large wall paintings from the late Renaissance and is now used as a wedding room . The castle also has a knight's hall measuring 27 by 9 meters .
Todays use
Today the castle is owned by the Zilly e. V., who conducts tours. Weddings, exhibitions and other events also take place.
