The Felsenwehr hydropower plant (also known as the Felsenwehr power plant ) is a run-of-river power plant in the Kottern district of Kempten . It is powered by the water power of the Iller , in which the plant is located.
The small hydropower plant was built in 1851 instead of water wheels . In 1884–1885, 1891 and 1920–1922 the power station used by Kottern Textil AG received new turbines. The production of electricity ended for the time being in 2000. After important technical construction work, three new Kaplan turbines were installed in 2001 . The water has a drop height of 6.1 meters and, in the optimal case, up to 52,000 liters of water per second flow through it. The conversion increased productivity by a third. Part of the electrical energy generated is fed into the network of the Allgäu overland plant free of charge .
The Iller breakthrough geotope at Oberkottern is at the same height .
