The Illerstrasse hydropower plant is a run- of -river power plant belonging to the Allgäu overland plant in Kempten (Allgäu) . It is powered by the water power of the Iller , in which the plant is located.
The electricity provider's oldest power plant went into operation in 1901 after a nine-month construction period. In 1926 there was a major renovation and expansion to what is essentially still the current status.
The power plant has four turbines with a combined output of 1,050 kW and is located between the administrative buildings of the Allgäu overland plant. In the first stage of expansion in 1901, the power plant had two Francis turbines with a total output of 300 kW. Nine years later, a third turbine was connected to the Iller and a larger steam turbine was installed. The expanded power plant now had an output of 950 kW. In 1926 a Kaplan turbine was installed with an output of 850 kW. In 1959 a fish ladder was built.
Since 1978 the power plant has only been generating electricity from hydropower. The water weir system of the old mill is used.
In the old turbine hall there are regular guided tours and music events as part of the Kempten Jazz Spring .
