History and description of the building

According to tradition, the first Holtrup chapel is said to have been built at the point where the translation of the relics of Alexander of Rome stopped on the way to Wildeshausen in 851 . It is now believed that there was a chapel there before, in which the relics were placed overnight. In De miraculis sancti Alexandri , however, no chapel is reported.

The medieval chapel was destroyed in 1538 in a feud between the bishopric of Münster and the county of Oldenburg . The current half-timbered chapel with roof turret was built in 1718 and renovated in 1744. From 1742 to 1833 there was an annual procession to the chapel on the day of the Visitation .

The Holtrup Chapel was extensively renovated in 2015 with the participation of the village community.
