The Klingenberg hydropower plant is a hydropower plant at the foot of the Klingenberg dam . It was built from 1908 to 1914 and has been in operation since 1914. The operator is ENSO Energie Sachsen Ost AG .

Facilities and history

The power plant is located just a few meters below the 310 m long and 40 m high gravity dam of the Klingenberg dam, which primarily serves as a drinking water reservoir for Dresden and Freital . A pressure pipeline that starts at the foot of the dam wall allowed max. 3.3 m³ / s of water fed to two Francis spiral turbines . The maximum height of fall is 34.5 m. The turbines were built by Voith in Heidenheim in 1913 . They have a 540 mm impeller and each deliver 400 kW of power to a synchronous generator at 600 rpm. The generators were built in 1913 by Sachsenwerke Dresden as two-phase alternating current generators. Each generator was connected to a group of transformers in a Scott circuit , which generated three-phase current from the two alternating currents of the generators shifted by 90 ° . After leaving the turbines, the water flows through headrace tunnels and pressure pipes into the power plants in Dorfhain and Tharandt and then into the Dresden-Coschütz waterworks, where it is supplied to the drinking water supply.

Renovation and renewal

The power plant with its two machine sets was in operation almost unchanged for 100 years. In 1986 the switchgear and control system was renewed. The old marble control panel with the switching elements and measuring instruments is still completely preserved. In 1996, the control technology was converted to a PLC control so that the power plant can be operated automatically. In the winter of 2014/2015, the power plant was comprehensively renovated and a machine set was taken off the grid and shut down. This was necessary because a smaller amount of water is now withdrawn for the drinking water treatment in Coschütz. The second turbine was completely overhauled as part of the modernization and the two-phase generator was replaced by a new three-phase generator, which was manufactured by the Anhaltische Elektromotorenwerk Dessau . The Scott circuit previously used was therefore no longer required. The old generator is on the energy adventure trail as a showpiece in front of the Rabenauer Grund hydropower plant .

The control technology was expanded again so that the power plant is now remotely monitored and controlled from a central control room.
