The hydroelectric power plant La Grande-2-A ( French: Centrale La Grande-2-A ) is a storage power plant in the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Jamésie region on the Robert-Bourassa Réservoir , around five kilometers from the town of Radisson . In the immediate vicinity is the Robert-Bourassa hydropower station , the dam of the reservoir on La Grande Rivière around six kilometers east of it.
The power station is part of the Baie James hydropower project and has six Francis turbines . The installed power of the generators is 2106 MW , with a drop height of 138.5 meters. The power station is operated by Société d'énergie de la Baie James , a subsidiary of the state-owned energy supplier Hydro-Québec .
Construction work on the La Grande-2-A power plant began in the summer of 1987 and lasted until autumn 1992. The completely underground facility is located in a cavern that is 223 meters long, 22 meters wide and 46 meters high. For this purpose, 180,300 m³ of rock had to be hewn out of the hard rock of the Canadian Shield . The power plant was officially opened on October 1, 1991 with the commissioning of the first turbine.
