The Mår hydropower plant is a hydropower plant in Norway.
location
The power plant is located in Vestfjorddalen east of Rjukan , in the municipality of Tinn , in the Norwegian province ( Fylke ) Vestfold og Telemark is. The power plant is located in the catchment area of Skiensvassdraget . The inflow area of 770 km² uses the rivers Mår and Gøyst and includes the reservoirs Mårvatn, Kalhovd, Gøyst, Strengen and Grotte.
history
The Mårdamm was built in 1918 before the watercourses were regulated. The construction of a regulation system on Kalhovd and Strengen began in 1941. With the outbreak of the Second World War , construction work came to a standstill. The German occupying power wanted to finish the facility during the war. At the end of the war, the Norwegian state took over the facility. In 1948 the power plant with the first two turbines could be put into operation. Two more followed in 1949, until the last turbine was connected in 1954.
technology
The power plant has five Pelton turbines and delivers an output of 180 MW. The average annual production is 1016 GWh. The annual flow rate is 560 million m³. A tunnel leads from the water reservoir through the mountain down to the power station. In this tunnel there are two 1250 m long penstocks with an inclination of 40 °. The total drop is 820 m. A wooden staircase with 3875 steps runs between the pressure pipes. It is considered to be one of the longest wooden stairs in the world. The generator hall was blown out of the mountain.
The power plant is open to visitors in summer.
