The Saratov hydropower plant ( Russian Саратовская ГЭС ), also known as Lenin Komsomol , is a hydropower plant on the Volga . It is located in the Saratov Oblast near the city of Balakowo and is fed from the Saratower Reservoir . The hydropower plant is part of the Volga-Kama cascade . The power plant is operated by the OAO "Саратовская ГЭС".

history

The construction of the Saratov hydropower plant was part of the Soviet industrialization plan The Great Construction of Communism (Великие стройки коммунизма) for the construction of the Volga-Kama Cascade. The construction was approved on June 1, 1956 by the Council of Ministers of the USSR .

Many of the workers and engineers moved to the nearby town of Balakowo in the course of construction and also helped with the construction of buildings in the town. The construction of the power station and the dam was called a people's project and was built by the people of the Soviet Union. In practice, there were mainly volunteers from the CPSU youth organization Komsomol . Through their use, the power plant also received the alternative name Lenin Komosol .

In the autumn of 1967 the dam was completed and the damming of the river began. In December of the same year, the first four machine houses with the associated water turbines were put into operation. The final completion was announced in November 1971.

Technical specifications

The core area of the hydropower plant consists of a 1260 m long and 40 m high artificially constructed dam. This dam is flanked by a 14-kilometer-long earth wall. The combined dam construction dams the Volga and forms the Saratower reservoir .

The power plant has an output of 1,360  MW . Today the power plant consists of 21 machine houses, 21 of which have rotor blades (60 MW each), two with horizontal turbines (45 MW each) and a small generator with 10 MW on the fish ladder .

Power lines

The 500 kV lines from the Saratow hydropower plant to the Balakowo nuclear power plant cross the Volga with a 1.6 kilometer long span. The mast at the power plant is 159 meters high, the one on the east bank of the Volga 197 meters and the highest overhead line mast in Russia.
