The Stonebyres hydroelectric power station , English Stonebyres (Hydro-electric) Power Station , is a hydroelectric power station near the Scottish town of Lanark in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 2011, the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The associated weir systems are classified separately as Category A structures.

history

The Clyde Valley Electrical Power Co. was founded in the 1920s to meet the region's increasing energy needs . The establishment of two hydropower plants near Lanark was decided by parliament in 1924. Only the company operating the mills in New Lanark reported concerns. Since a sufficient flow of water to supply the mills could be guaranteed despite the power station, these dispersed. At the time of the decision, the use of hydropower in Scotland was still in its infancy. At most, operators of aluminum smelters operated hydropower plants to cover their own needs. The lack of base load suitability of the hydropower plant was compensated for by the construction of a conventional power plant nearby. After the successful establishment of this tandem of two hydropower plants, further hydropower plant networks were set up in Scotland.

The facility was built between 1925 and 1927. Edward MacColl was responsible for the planning with the advice of John Stirling-Maxwell, 10th Baronet and most likely Robert Lorimer . In the 1970s, the systems were modernized and largely automated. By modernizing the generator system, the efficiency could be increased by 10% in the 1990s. Both the Stonebyres power station and the Bonnington hydropower station upstream are now controlled from Stonebyres.

description

Weir to supply the power plant

The simply classical designed hydroelectric power station stands at the foot of the Stonebyres Falls along the Clyde around three kilometers west of Lanark. The water required is diverted from the Clyde at a weir around 500 m upstream above the waterfalls. It is diverted into a 1.98 m diameter pipe that runs in a three meter wide tunnel. The difference in height between the extraction point and the power plant is 29.7 m on average. Two Francis turbines with a diameter of 3.4 m and an output of 3  MW each are installed. They have a flow rate of 24 m³ / s.
